Prayers for the Parched: Fresh Perspective

Celebrate the Sabbath by Taking Time to Enjoy God's Nature and Gain a New Perspective

Celebrate the Sabbath by Taking Time to Enjoy God’s Nature and Gain a New Perspective

This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.  1 Corinthians 2:13

Thank you for showing me things through your Spirit

Things that I would never otherwise see

Facts of hope

Reminders of your words, and your love

New paths that were not evident before

Fresh ways to look at the “same ol”

Different solutions to rutted problems

Thank you for moving me from “What am I going to do?” to “What if I try this?”

Thank you for revealing the mind of Christ in me to me

Thank you for imparting divine wisdom when I need it most

Prayers for the Parched: A Quilt Square

Sometimes our lives are like Quilt Squares

Sometimes our lives are like Quilt Squares

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Romans 15:13

I find it hard to be grateful for my circumstances at this time

But I praise you for what you’re doing with my circumstances

I praise you for what your intentions are

I praise you for your goodness

Even without my understanding II know you will use these circumstances for your perfect purposes

I praise you that I can believe this truth

I believe you ARE in control

I will guard my tongue when I speak to others

I choose to praise you with my words

I don’t know how to thank you yet

I don’t know what to thank you for in this situation

I don’t know what to do with my emotions

I believe you are larger than all my emotions combined

You (as God) are larger than my humanness

Thank yo for my emotions, and even the pain they bring

Send your Comforter – the Holy Spirit to bind these wounds

Send the Holy Spirit to mend my heart

Prayers for the Parched: Celebrating the Sabbath

Celebrate the Sabbath by Taking Time to Enjoy God's Nature

Celebrate the Sabbath by Taking Time to Enjoy God’s Nature

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.  Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.  On it you shall not do any work, neither you, not your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, not the alien within your gates.  For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day.  Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8-11

When I grew up, stores were closed on Sundays.  As a nation, we actively took a day to rest.  For me, it was time to spend with the family, include Sunday dinner.  Now, Sundays are another day to do errands.  It’s not necessarily even for church, with churches offering services on Friday or Saturday evenings.  Honestly, I’m grateful for the flexibility.  Taking a Sabbath day isn’t about a particular day of the week.  Pastors don’t rest on Sundays.  It’s about incorporating a time of rest into our schedules.  If we don’t celebrate the Sabbath, our mental and physical health suffers, and it’s easier to lose perspective.  As always, God’s commandments are for our good.

I praise you for your plan of Sabbath

For one day of rest and focus in every seven

Forgive me when I neglect to schedule this time in my life

When will I learn your pace?

In your pacing is peace and rest and Godspeed

Your plan gives energy for living life

Come and show me how to set your pace in my life.

Prayers for the Parched: Incorporating God’s Goals

Learning to Incorporate God's Goals Into Our Goals

Learning to Incorporate God’s Goals Into Our Goals

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do; and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.  Ecclesiastes 2:11 (KJV)

Like Jesus, we live in a word focused on selfishness

I am surrounded and encouraged to…

Pursue my goals

Fulfill my Will

Work for my purposes

Be true to my convictions

as they make sense to me

Look out for myself first

Act independently

Bring me to Yourself

as each of these dictums fails without a spiritual core

as each proves to be vanity

I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it.  God does it so that men will revere him.  Ecclesiastes 3:14

Thank you for the model Jesus gives us

Jesus sought only to pursue your will

He sought only to please you

With these single-purpose goals

Jesus changed history and eternity for all mankind

Paul exhorts us to become more Christlike

I want to be more Christlike

So Lord, amidst the complexities of our

Individual and global worlds

Show us what it means to seek only your will and to seek only to please you

By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.  John 5:30

Let me behold the principles in your word for my life

Order my priorities

Reshape my perspectives

Show me how to incorporate your goals as my goals

In so doing

I walk in your presence

Even as my feel walk through the daily paths

Position me to receive the flowing waters of the everlasting life

And my life will become full with your delight

Prayers for the Parched: Ready and Steady

Lord, Ready and Steady me for the Day Ahead

Lord, Ready and Steady me for the Day Ahead

Ready and Steady

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly, not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;   1 Peter 5:2

Ready us, and

Steady us

For the tasks at hand

Once again this prayer helps me when I’m juggling 15 different projects and 3 different hats trying to lead, manage, serve both at work and at home.  Life can be full and good.  This Ready-and-Steady us prayer works well when we are facing unknown situations.  The Lord goes before us and gives us the peace of mind and the tools to handle whatever situation comes our way.  It feels good to know that as I do all I can do, God steps in to do all He can do.

Prayers for the Parched: Ruth’s Humility

Boaz said to Ruth, "Don't Go and Glean in Another Field."

Boaz said to Ruth, “Don’t Go and Glean in Another Field.”

Boaz asked the foreman of his harvesters, “Whose young woman is that?”  The foreman replied, “She is the Moabitess who came back from Moab with Naomi.  She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’  She went into the field and has worked steadily from morning till now, except for a short test in the shelter.”  So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me.  Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here.”  Ruth 2:5-8

There is never a point in Ruth’s story when she says, “Bummer, I gave up my life in Moab.  I should have gone home to my parents when I had the chance.  There’s no prosperity evident in this country.  I’ve got to go glean in the fields like a poverty stricken person.  I would have thought God would have showed up with some favor and prosperity before now.”

Rather Ruth was humble.  “May I glean in your field?”  God helps the humble.  He gave Ruth protection, favor, Boaz and Obed.

Thank you for Ruth and what a marvelous example she is.

Thank you God for being able to glean in your field

Father, put in me the desire to do and have

The right things                                      (planting seeds)

The right motive                                    (for God’s glory)

The right attitude                                   (humility)

The right heart                                        (heart after God)

Prayers for the Parched: My Heartbeat Prayer

Wanting in My Heart the Same Things God Wants for Me

Wanting in My Heart the Same Things God Wants for Me

My Heartbeat Prayer

And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.  Isaiah 58:11  KJV

This is a simple prayer that I say often.  Each line came independently months apart.  I say it now with the rhythm of a heartbeat.  It’s my heart beating after God’s heart.

Help me

Heal me

Guide me

Prepare me

Change me

Deliver me

Redeem me

Restore me

Prayers for the Parched: Worship to the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit Gives Us Discernment

The Holy Spirit Gives Us Discernment

Worship to the Holy Spirit

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to prayer for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.  Romans 8:26-27

Praise to you, O Holy Spirit

You have been given to live in us

You provide comfort

You encourage me

You strengthen my heart

You keep me doing good works

You keep me focused on truth

Holy Spirit, you are at work in me constantly bringing about sanctification

You are eternally holy

You are developing holiness in me

Holy Spirit, You point me to Jesus

Jesus is the solution to my thirst, to my hunger, to my need for light

You bring me into the fullness of Jesus

In Jesus, there is rest, gentleness, and renewal

You encourage me by bringing me to Jesus

Praise be to you, Holy Spirit, for praying for the people of God

You bear me up in my weaknesses

Thank you, Holy Spirit for assuring and confirming that I am a child of God

Thank you, Holy Spirit, for putting truth in my heart

Thank you for continually praying for me

Thank you for being my enabler

I worship you that you’re at work in my circumstances

With you, there is variety

You are the implementer of the phrase, “Getting it Done”

Show me how to work in conjunction with your ways

Thank you for your diligence

Prayers for the Parched: Perspectives

Same day. Same circumstances: Two Different perspective. Learning to Rejoice Always

Same day, Same circumstances: Two Different perspectives. Learning to Rejoice Always

Always be joyful. Pray continually, and give thanks whatever happens.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NCV

Should you find yourself stuck in traffic; don’t despair

There are people in this world for whom driving is an unheard of privilege

Should you have a bad day at work;

Thank of the man who has been out of work for years

Should you despair over a relationship gone bad;

Think of the person who has never known what it’s like to love and be love in return

Should you grieve the passing of another weekend;

Think of the woman in dire straits, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week to feed her children

Should your car break down, leaving you miles from assistance;

Think of the paraplegic who world love the opportunity to take that walk

Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror;

Think of the cancer patient I chemotherapy who wishes she had hair to examine

Should you find yourself at a loss and pondering what if life all about asking, “What is my purpose?”  Be thankful;

There are those who didn’t live long enough to get the opportunity

Should you find yourself the victim of other people’s bitterness, ignorance, smallness of insecurities;

Remember, things could be worse

You could be one of them.
